WHY WE CELEBRATE LOHRI ?

Hi Readers!

Hope you are doing well?.Festive season is still going on in India.Coming festival is LOHRI. Lohri is a popular winter time Punjabi  festival, celebrated primarily by Sikhs and Hindus from the Punjab region. The significance about the Lohri festival are many and these link the festival to the Punjab region.

Like most other festivals in India, Lohri is also related to the agricultural activities of the farmers. It marks the harvesting season in Punjab and the end of the winter season. Lohri usually falls on the last day of the month of Paush, a day known as Makar Sankranti in most parts of the country. According to the English calendar, Lohri falls on 13th January every year.

In Punjab wheat which is the main crop being planted all over the place. Wheat is planted in the month of October and harvested during the months of March – April. In the first month of January, all the fields turn up with a promising golden harvest, and as such, farmers in the land are celebrating Lohri at a time of rest periods until such a time crops are ready for cutting and then gathering.

Interestingly, the next day of Lohri is known as Maghi, a day that signifies the beginning of the month of Magh.Which is also known as new year by Hindu calendar.

this is an auspicious day to take holy dip and give away charity. Kheer is prepared in sugar cane juice to mark the day.The rituals related to Lohri symbolize the attachment of the people with Mother Nature. A few days before the festival, youngsters get together in groups and go round their localities singing folk songs.

Here am sharing my childhood Lohri  experience. People collect firewood and money for the bonfire that is scheduled on the night of Lohri. On the special day, offerings of phulley (popcorn), moongphali (peanuts) and rewri (a sweet delicacy made out of jaggery and sesame seed) are offered to the fire along with the music and dance. We use to go our society quaters for Lohari. People use to give peanuts, rewri, some of money to Kids, we use to sing Lohri songs. The most popular -
